Reliance Jio added 2.40 million mobile subscribers in August 2026, the highest among Indian telecom operators. But Airtel came surprisingly close, adding 2.11 million new subscribers during the month, according to the latest data from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).
The difference between the two operators was only around 2.9 lakh subscribers in August. Together, Jio and Airtel accounted for about 82% of India's 5.51 million net wireless subscriber additions in August.
August 2026 Subscriber Additions
The overall subscriber base tells a different story. Jio had 50.84 crore subscribers at the end of August, compared with 49.16 crore for Airtel. That means the two companies were separated by about 1.68 crore subscribers overall.
So while Airtel came close to Jio in new additions during August, Jio still had a sizable lead in total subscribers.
Jio and Airtel Took Most of India's New Mobile Subscribers
India added around 55.1 lakh wireless mobile subscribers in August 2026, taking the total wireless subscriber base to about 129.3 crore. More than 45 lakh of those net additions came from Jio and Airtel combined. This means most of the month's growth went to the country's two largest private telecom operators.
Vodafone Idea also added around 5.06 lakh subscribers, while BSNL added about 4.93 lakh. This was different from periods when some of the major operators were recording significant subscriber losses. The numbers therefore show that August was a month of overall subscriber growth rather than a shift involving only one operator.
Jio and Airtel are also competing across different recharge segments, including the new Voice and SMS-only plans introduced under TRAI's recent rules.
Airtel Came Much Closer to Jio in Monthly Additions
Jio's 2.40 million additions may look significantly higher when seen alone, but the comparison with Airtel is more interesting. Airtel added 2.11 million subscribers, which is about 88% of Jio's August additions. The difference was only around 290,000 subscribers.
That does not mean Airtel has caught up with Jio in total subscribers. It simply shows that the two operators had relatively close subscriber additions during this particular month. This distinction matters because Jio's overall subscriber base was still around 16.8 million larger than Airtel's at the end of August.
Where Did India's Subscriber Growth Come From?
August numbers also show a noticeable difference between urban and rural subscriber growth. Urban wireless subscriptions increased by around 0.70% during August, while rural subscriptions grew by only about 0.06%.
This means most of the increase in India's wireless subscriber base came from the urban segment during the month. The overall wireless subscriber base increased by around 0.43% in August, according to TRAI data.
Where Does Vi and BSNL Stands?
Vodafone Idea and BSNL both recorded subscriber additions in August, although their numbers were much smaller than those of Jio and Airtel. Vi added around 5.06 lakh subscribers and ended the month with approximately 19.96 crore mobile subscribers. Its market share was around 15.43%.
BSNL added about 4.93 lakh subscribers and had around 9.37 crore mobile subscribers at the end of August, giving it a market share of about 7.24%.
This puts the four major operators in a very different position by subscriber base. Jio and Airtel together accounted for more than three quarters of India's wireless subscribers, while Vi remained the third largest operator and BSNL had a much smaller share.
Jio Also Added 5G Fixed Wireless Users
The TRAI data also contains another interesting number beyond ordinary mobile subscribers. Jio added 148,870 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) subscribers during August, while Airtel added 96,339. Jio also added 229,659 UBR based FWA connections during the month.
These are not mobile subscribers, so they should not be added to the figures in the main table. FWA is a separate form of broadband connectivity that uses wireless networks to provide internet access. This gives some additional context to the broader connectivity growth taking place alongside the increase in mobile subscribers.
What the Latest TRAI Numbers Actually Say
Jio remained India's largest mobile operator in August and added the most subscribers during the month. But Airtel's performance was close enough to make the comparison interesting.
The two operators added more than 45 lakh subscribers together, while the entire Indian wireless market added about 55 lakh. At the same time, the overall gap between Jio and Airtel remained much larger than their monthly difference, with Jio ahead by about 1.68 crore subscribers at the end of August.
The data also shows that urban subscriptions grew much faster than rural subscriptions during the month, while Vi and BSNL both recorded positive additions.
The numbers show how concentrated India's recent mobile subscriber growth has become around Jio and Airtel, while the two operators continue to have a much smaller gap in monthly additions than their overall subscriber bases might suggest.
