How Long Does a SIM Stay Active Without Recharge? My 2-Year Airtel Experience

It is not possible to keep two sim activated in a phone due to growing prices of telecom services. If you have a secondary SIM that you don't use regularly, you may be thinking: How Long Does a SIM Stay Active Without Recharge? Or how many days SIM work after not recharging?

SIM card and 90-day calendar showing how long a SIM stays active without recharge

I have two sims in my 4g smartphone: one is JIO and another is Airtel. Jio is my regular sim due to bank connectivity, better plans, better network coverage. My Airtel sim was just dormant for over 2 years due to not charging or simply I couldn't afford that!

You may think that I should have lost that sim till now but surprisingly it isn’t. Yes, you heard it right and you will learn why this happened in this article where we will learn everything TRAI sim deactivation rule for recharge with many other simple hacks.

How Long Does a SIM Stay Active Without Recharge

A prepaid SIM in India can stay active for at least 90 days without recharge, and in some cases it can remain active much longer. TRAI says a prepaid SIM cannot be deactivated for non-usage before 90 days. Operators may allow the number to remain active beyond that period under certain conditions.

Additionally, if you have enough balance in your account, the operator can deduct up to ₹20 and keep the number active for another 30 days.

But here's the interesting part: a SIM does not always stop working after 90 days without a recharge.

I have a secondary Airtel SIM that stayed active for more than two years without a recharge. During that time, I could still receive incoming calls and bank OTPs. When I finally recharged the number last week, it was still working normally.

What Does TRAI Say About an Unused Prepaid SIM?

TRAI says a prepaid SIM cannot be deactivated for non-usage during the first 90 days. This 90-day period is about whether the number has been used, not simply whether you have recharged it.

TRAI considers activities such as calls, outgoing SMS, data sessions and certain value-added services when determining non-usage.

So, “a SIM gets deactivated 90 days after the last recharge” is not an accurate way to describe the rule. The 90 days is a non-usage period, not a fixed expiry date for every SIM. Operators can also have a longer non-usage period under the applicable rules.

What Happens to a SIM After 90 Days Without Usage?

After 90 days without usage, a prepaid SIM can be deactivated for non-usage. However, it may remain active if the ₹20 retention rule applies.

If you have enough balance in your prepaid account, the operator can deduct up to ₹20 and extend the number for another 30 days.

This can happen again while sufficient balance remains. For example, if your SIM does not recharged for 90 days but your account has enough balance, the operator may deduct ₹20 instead of immediately deactivating the number

What Happens If a SIM Is Deactivated Due to non-Recharge?

If your SIM is deactivated because of non-usage, you get a minimum 15-day period to reactivate the same number.

TRAI allows the subscriber to reactivate the number during this period by paying an amount of up to ₹20, subject to the operator's applicable terms. (trai.gov.in)

In simple terms:

90 days of non-usage → possible deactivation → at least 15 days to reactivate

So even after deactivation, the number isn't necessarily lost immediately.

My 2-Year Airtel SIM Experience Without Recharge

My secondary Airtel SIM stayed active for more than two years without a recharge. I didn't recharge the number for more than two years, but I could still receive incoming calls and bank OTPs.

When I eventually recharged the number, the SIM was still working normally. This was my actual experience, but it doesn't mean every Airtel SIM will behave the same way.

TRAI's definition of usage includes calls, outgoing SMS, data sessions and certain value-added services. However, I couldn't find an official Airtel or TRAI source that explains exactly why my SIM remained active for so long.

Honestly, I tried to recharge my airtel SIM many times but also stepped back due to the high price. Now, I recharged to understand how it worked.

Airtel SIM Activation Rule Without Recharge

Airtel says a prepaid connection can be deactivated after 90 continuous days without qualifying usage when the applicable main balance is below ₹20. This rule is almost the same as for the other telecom operators.

Airtel includes voice/video calls, outgoing SMS, data sessions and certain VAS as qualifying usage.

If the main balance is ₹20 or more, Airtel can deduct ₹20 every 30 days and extend the non-usage period. If the number is deactivated, Airtel provides a 15-day period to retain the number by paying ₹20.

How Long Can a Jio SIM Stay Active Without Recharge?

A Jio SIM can remain active for at least the 90-day non-usage period. Also, Jio can extend that period by another 30 days when the ₹20 retention rule applies.

Jio says that after 90 days or more of non-usage, if the main account balance is above ₹20, it can be deducted and the non-usage period extended by another 30 days. If the number is deactivated, Jio provides 15 days for reactivation by paying ₹20.

How Long Can a Vi SIM Stay Active Without Recharge?

A Vi SIM can remain active for at least the 90-day non-usage period. Also, Vi can extend the period by another 30 days when the ₹20 retention rule applies.

If enough balance is available, Vi can deduct ₹20 and extend the number's retention by another 30 days. If the number is disconnected because of non-usage, Vi provides a 15-day period for reactivation.

The exact recharge-validity rules can still vary by operator and plan.

Does SIM Validity Continue After Recharge Expiry?

Yes, a SIM validity continues even after its recharge plan has expired. Your recharge gives you certain services and benefits for a specific period. When that period ends, some or all of those services may be restricted.

But that does not automatically mean that the mobile number itself has been deactivated. This is why recharge expiry and SIM deactivation are two different things. The 90-day TRAI rule relates to non-usage, while your recharge has its own validity period.

So, How Long Does a SIM Stay Active Without Recharge?

Direct Answer: A prepaid SIM can remain active for at least the 90-day non-usage period, and in some cases it can remain active much longer.

There is no single maximum number of days that applies to every SIM. The 90 days is the important TRAI threshold for non-usage. After that, the number may be deactivated or may be retained through the ₹20 mechanism if the applicable conditions are met.

And my own Airtel SIM is a real-world example of how much longer a number can sometimes remain active: mine stayed usable for more than two years without a recharge. However, that does not mean that every SIM will remain active for two years.

Should You Keep an Important SIM Without Recharging It?

No, you must keep recharge your important or primary sim. However, you can leave a secondary SIM without regular recharges.

If your sim is linked to your bank account, UPI, WhatsApp, email recovery, or other important accounts, it is better to keep it active according to your operator's current requirements.
